Whether at home, or dealing with systems at a work detecting network
attacks against a system is always a concern,
For the May 2012 UUASC-LA meeting John Pearsall presents a primer on
the intrusion detection tool Snort, orginally covered
in July 2004 UUASC-LA presentation , and the Ruby on Rails Network
monitoring framework Snorby, which simplifies the use of Snort.
After covering a brief introduction to both tools John will provide
detail on how to write optimal rules for detecting service and
application-specific
vulnerabilities. The presentation will also inclued running attacks
via a test harness to observe behavior and refine the ruleset.
John Pearsall works as a Linux Systems Administrator in Culver City.
He hopes to help tame the security quagmire that hosting diverse
content can
provide through the better use of tools to identify, manage, and
provide trending.
After the meeting, you are invited to mingle with many of the chapter members
at UUASC-LA's new after meeting location once we figure out where that will be.
